Reaching Adolescents (Book Review). Education, Fall85, Vol.
106 Issue 1, p66, 1/3p; Reaching Adolescents. The Young Adult Book and the
School. Arthea J. S. Reed, Holt, Rinehart and Winston, New York, 1985. The
book is divided into four parts. The first, a rationale, is based on the
research of psychologists, learning theorists, educators, and parents. Part
Two is a comprehensive examination of young adult literature by theme and
genre. It makes no attempt at library criticism, but catalogues and
annotates the world of literature for young people. Part Three deals with
methodology, discussing techniques for incorporating young adult books into
the classroom of the middle and secondary schools. Throughout the five
chapters of this part a wide variety of unit plans are provided that
incorporate young adult books. The final part of the book gives the
teacher, librarian, parent, and university instructor a succinct and
complete report of available literature for the young. It discusses ways to
build a classroom library. The book is intended for use in university
classes. It is appropriate for teachers and for students. The author seeks
to provide scholarly information about young adult literature, together
with an arsenal of ideas for effective use of such literature. The author
is known as "Charlie" and is an associate professor at University of North
Carolina. [ABSTRACT
