Action Plan: 9th Grade Research Paper and Project on the Renaissance

Grade Level- 9th grade

Curriculum/Subject area: English/CP9

Content Information:

Summary:  The research paper is a required project for 9th grade English.  Students will be completing a research paper and a project on the Renaissance    (we expanded the time period to include Elizabethan England and Shakespeare.

Students need to pick out a person or event from the Renaissance to write a 10 paragraph(minimum) informative research paper (including introduction and conclusion).  If a student chooses a person, they should be involved in the arts of some sort, or history, or political influences.  The paper should inform what this person/event contributed to this period.  Students may work in groups of 2 or 3 while gathering information, but all must write an original paper based on the research gathered.

All papers should contain at least one direct quote, one paraphrase, and one summary all properly cited using format taught in class and used in Writers, Inc. books.  All papers should use parenthetical references and have a bibliography page.  A minimum of 4 sources is required for this project.

In addition to the research paper, students must complete a project.  A few examples are listed below

1.     Create a scrapbook detailing the life of the person researched.

2.     Build a model of something which represents the contribution made by this person or event.

3.     Play music this artist created and explain the particular musical attributes of the Renaissance period and this artist’s influence.

4.     Create a video reenacting part of a person’s life and/or event researched- this may be done in a puppet show.

5.     Create a PowerPoint presentation (should contain 10 to 20 slides)
