Fun with Poetry

Curriculum Area:
Language Arts
Specific Topic: Poetry
As a way to interest fifth graders in poetry, I, the Library
Media Specialist, visited 5th grade classrooms. I talked about the various types of poetry
and shared examples. We read poems from
poetry boxes. A poetry box is a small/tiny box with a tiny object in it that
matches up with a poem. The poem is also
inside. Students get to pick a box and
share it with the class. I’ve also been
making weekly visits to classrooms for a “poetry break”. This idea is discussed in Caroline Feller
Bauer’s book, The Poetry Break.
