1871, what we now know as Germany was a group of Central
European states whose peoples shared a common language and
traditions. They were united as the German Empire by Otto von
Bismarck in 1871. Divided again after World War II, it was not
until the autumn of 1990 that East and West Germany were

of short stories in German is ideal for beginning and
intermediate students of the language. Here you can read
stories in their original German form. Authors represented in
the collection include the Brothers Grimm, Heinrich Hoffmann,
Friedrich Schiller, and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The
stories, many of which are presented in both German and
English translation, include such children's favorites as

extensive bibliography, and a tourist guide to Bach's Germany.

Ludwig van Beethoven was born on December 16, 1770 in Bonn,
Germany, and is considered one of the great composers of
classical music. This site, maintained by the Raptus
Association for Music Appreciation, includes extensive
information about Beethoven's life, work, and legacy. The
detailed biography provides a chronicle of the composer's
tumultuous life, from his rough childhood to the onset of his
deafness and the creation of his great works. The site
contains a large picture gallery; a comprehensive list of
Beethoven's works; and the Creation Histories section, which
discusses the many influences that affected his compositions.

Wagner Website |
| Richard
Wagner (1813-1883) is arguably the most famous of all German
composers. Although he composed in a variety of other musical
genres, Wagner is best known for his operas, particularly the
four works that make up The Ring of the Nibelung, which
dramatize tales from Nordic mythology. This site offers a
timeline of Wagner's life and a number of essays that explore
the hidden meanings and symbolism within Wagner's

Schumann (1810-1856) |
| One
of the leading figures of Europe's Early Romantic Period,
German-born Robert Schumann (1810-1856) showed an early talent
for both music and writing. In later life he devoted most of
his energies to musical composition, although for much of his
adult life he was overshadowed by his wife, Clara, an
accomplished concert pianist. This site from a music fan
features a lengthy biographical profile, a complete list of
his musical compositions, and selected examples of his
writing. There also is an extensive MIDI library of audio
files; QuickTime or similar multimedia plug-in required.
