Eight Parts of Speech

Background Information
Students learn the eight parts of speech in the elementary grades but they must be reinforced and reviewed in the ninth grade English class. Prior to the library visit, students should know how to use the parts of the book and the purpose of various reference sources. The lesson reinforces good grammar skills and organizational skills.

Introduction
The parts of speech explain the ways words can be used in various contexts. Every word in the English language functions as at least one part of speech; many words can serve, at different times, as two or more parts of speech, depending on the context.

Goal
The Eight Parts of Speech Web Page pro motes high school students' understanding of the English language by examining the eight parts of speech. The use of Internet technology and hands-on activities are designed to heighten the interest's of students.

Lesson Procedures:
1. With the librarian's assistance, pull books and materials that pertain to the eight parts of speech.
2. Explain to students the practical importance an d educational value of knowing how to quickly locate and efficiently use information resources.
3. Review the organization and use of the following resources with students as needed: nonfiction books, Internet web sites, and search engines.
4. Teach or review the purpose, form, and use of bibliograp hic entries and the Works Cited page.
5. Explain to students that during several visits to the library, they will be gathering and using information on the eight parts of speech.
Instructional Directions:
Day 1- Introduction and Pre-test
1. Introduce the students to the Eight Parts of Speech Web Page. Then allow them to complete the first task of reviewing the eight parts of speech.
2. Students will go to this web site and complete the grammar pretest.
3. After each student has completed the pretest, they will print off their results for assessment and evaluation by the teacher.
4. The students will visit the web site The Parts of Speech

Day 2-Pronoun and Noun
1. Introduce the students to Pronoun and No un . Then allow them to complete the task.
pronoun A word that substitutes for a noun and refers to a person, place, thing, idea, or act that was mentioned previously or that can be inferred from the context of the sentence (he, she, it, that ).
noun A word or phrase that names a person, place, thing, quality, or act (Fred, New York, table, beauty, execution ). A noun may be used as the subject of a verb, the object of a verb, an identifying noun, the object of a preposition, or an appositive (an explanatory phrase coupled with a subject or object ).
After each student has completed the quiz, they will print off their results for assessment and evaluation by the teacher.

Day 3- Adverb and Adjective
1. Introduce the students to Adverb and Adjective . Then allow them to complete the task.
adverb A word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb (slowly, obstinately, much ).
adjective A word or combination of words that modifies a noun (blue-green, central, half-baked, temporary ).
After each student has completed the quiz, they will print off their results for assessment and evaluation by the teacher.

Day 4- Verb and Preposition
1. Introduce the students to Verb and Preposition Then allow them to complete the task.
verb A word or phrase that expresses action, existence, or occurrence (throw, be, happen ). Verbs can be transitive, requiring an object (her in I met her ), or intransitive, requiring only a subject (The sun rises ). Some verbs, like feel , are both transitive (Feel the fabric ) and intransitive (I feel cold , in which cold is an adjective and not an object).
preposition A word or phrase that shows the relationship of a noun to another noun (at, by, in, to, from, with )
After each student has completed the quiz, they will print off their results for assessment and evaluation by the teacher.

Day 5- Conjunction and Interjection
1. Intro duce the students to Conjunction and Interjection. Then allow them to complete the task.
conjunction A word that connects other words, phrases, or sentences (and, but, or, because ).
interjection A word, phrase, or sound used as an exclamation and capable of standing by itself (oh, Lord, my goodness ).
After each student has completed the quiz, they will print off their results for assessment and evaluation by the teacher.

Day 6- Video

Day 7- Review
Students will browse the following web page for review as the teacher and librarian circulates the room answering any remaining questions.

Day 8- Evaluation
Students will be paired up to make a power point presentation on one of the
eight parts of speech. Groups will pr esent their power point to the rest of the class as a follow up lesson.

Assessment Procedures:
Students' work will be assessed by their quizzes and their power point presentations.

Reflections:
Students are more aware of the eight parts of speech as well as being more familiar with the Library materials, which will help them as they complete research papers.
