What Made Them Great: Mathematicians Biography Pathfinder
Jennifer Barton, math and Karen Whitney, LMC

Research is fun when you know where to find great information. What could be better than learning the inside scoop on a personBs life? ItBs up to you to find the significance of the contributions made by a single mathematician of your choice.

This pathfinder will guide you on your mathematical adventure. Beware the pitfalls of BGoogleB or your time might disappear before you know it, and you will be left without information you can use.

Your Assignment:

You will research a famous mathematician in the library. The mathematician you choose should have made significant contributions to at least one of the branches of mathematics, i.e. algebra, geometry, trigonometry, probability & statistics, or calculus.

You are required to take notes, keep track of your sources and use both print and electronic sources. At least one of your sources should be from Infohio.

In the library, look at REF 920(biographies of people in a particular discipline), REF 510 (mathematics), and if you want a biography of an individual, check out the 921's.

The Presentation:

Once you have completed your research on the mathematician you have chosen, you will make a brochure. Using Microsoft Word Business Templates, choose a brochure that is simple and can be customized as you work.

Your brochure should include:
* A picture of the mathematician (be sure to cite the source)
* A biography of the mathematicianBs life
* A summary of the mathematicianBs contributions to mathematics
* An in-depth look at one or two of the mathematicianBs greatest contributions
* An Babout the authorB section which gives some information about you

You will also need to turn in a Works Cited (Bibliography) page in MLA format with your brochure. (Help will follow for this. Be alert!)

The following wesites are terrific for finding biographies of mathematicians. If you donBt know who you want to research, begin with the first site. It has many entries, all in alphabetical order. Also, please note some sites are dedicated to women in mathematics, if you have chosen a women for your research.
