Lesson Summary:

The third lesson for animal habitat research requires students to take the information they found through their sources and complete a research project.  The project will require the students to draw a picture of the habitat, choose an animal that lives in that habitat, note the animal’s adaptations, label a diagram of the animal’s adaptation, and then write a paragraph explaining what would happen to the animal if something negative happened to its environment/habitat.

Estimated Duration:

This part of the project would begin in the classroom and the children would finish it at home.

Commentary:  Students must have the books and information that they researched in the library.

Pre-Assessment:   Teachers will conference with student groups to assess that students have researched and learned the necessary elements to continue the assignment.

Scoring Guidelines: NA

Post-Assessment:

The final project will be graded on accuracy, neatness, and content.

Scoring Guidelines:

The final project will be worth a total of 30 points.  10 points for each page.

Instructional Procedures:

The teacher will begin by making sure the children have the books, notes and materials that they need from the library.  Each child will choose a habitat book and animal book.  The teacher will discuss the project with the students and give examples for each part of the project.  She will then pass out the project packets for the class to work on.  The class will work on this project both at school and at home.

Differentiated Instructional Support

The teacher/librarian will help the children select nonfiction books that they can read.  They will also work with the teacher/librarian to find information on the web.

Extension

Additional resources will be suggested for supplemental research.  Students are encouraged to research other animals in their habitat.

Homework Options and Home Connections

Students will be required to complete their final projects at home.

Interdisciplinary Connections

Literacy and language arts connections include: reading and writing activities.
