Lesson Summary:

The second lesson focuses on specific habitats and survival functions of animals.  The students will access and utilize library resources including print and non-print materials to gather information.  Videos and other materials will be used to model various habitats and animal survival.  Students will learn research methods including the use of the contents page, index, glossary and resource citation.  Ethical use of information will be discussed.


Estimated Duration:

The lesson would comprise of one library period.

 

 

Commentary: 


Pre-Assessment:   Students will add to their KWL chart to demonstrate their increased knowledge of animal habitats and survival.

 

Scoring Guidelines:

Students will add to the KWL chart as benchmarks are met.  Students will complete note cards as research is conducted.

 

Post-Assessment:

Teachers will be checking the KWL charts and research notes as well as class/group discussions.

 

 

 

Scoring Guidelines:

KWL charts will be required to have 3 bullets for each section.  A complete KWL chart will be worth 9 once complete.  Note cards will be checked for accuracy of facts.   Each group will be required to obtain 5 or more facts from each source used.  Students will be required to use at least 3 resources using a variety of media sources.  Students will also be required to cite their resources.


Instructional Procedures:

The teacher and librarian will facilitate the use of research materials as students begin to gather information, take notes, and organize their research information.  Instructors will provide a list of suggested resources and informational sites.


Differentiated Instructional Support

Materials will be provided that cover a range of learning styles and ability levels.


Extension

Additional reading, research and activities will be provided.


Homework Options and Home Connections

Students will be required to continue finding facts about their habitats from other resources.
