Grade 6-8 Scientific Inquiry Benchmark A: Explain that there are differing sets
of procedures for guiding scientific investigations and procedures are
determined by the nature of the investigation, safety considerations and appropriate

Lesson Summary: After Mrs. Yuko, the school librarian, has presented her lessons on the school library as a resource for researching Science Fair topics, I will introduce INFOhio as the preferred database for further research. Concentration will be on ACCESScience and EBSCOhost. Secondarily we will use Britannica online School edition. Using the computer lab Smart Board, the class, as a whole, will receive an introductory group lesson. The 7 class computers will be linked to INFOhio after the initial lesson so students may work independently on their individual topic search. .Estimated Duration: Two to three class periods. Additional time will be needed for remediation. Commentary:

1. Introduce INFOhio homepage using Smart Board. Discuss pin code for home use. Discuss various providers in INFOhio listed on homepage. Infer which would provide best resources for Science Fair search. Practice navigating through pages. 2. Navigate to ACCESScience homepage. After discussion of the site, model a search using the topic, rusting. Discuss possible keywords. Decide on 4. Discuss possible keyword pairs. Choose two or three. Navigate through some articles and choose 3 sites and articles that closely match the topic. 3. Repeat Step 2 using EBSCOhost. 4. As a class, decide which two articles provide the most useful information for a research paper. 5. Begin the process for individual student topics. Use the pre-assigned buddy to assist with keywords and help. Complete step 2 and 3 for individual topics. 6. Remember to fill out your worksheet and print your final two choices for articles and place them in your folder. 7. Sample questions: What is your topic? What keywords will you use to locate articles related to your topic? Have you paired with your partner to find common articles? What additional keywords can narrow your search? Have you book marked sites of interest? Have you printed out your final articles? Differentiated Instructional Support Will be based upon student need with options such as: Use of the reading tutor to differentiate appropriateness of content. Use of the computer teacher to assist in navigation of internet sites, use of peer tutor, teacher collected internet sites and/or articles for student to choose from. . Homework Options and Home Connections Parents have been introduced to INFOhio at Curriculum night. They have been given access codes. Continued searching on home computers and the public library computers will be encouraged.

Each student will have the opportunity to increase his or her researching skills on computer. The will be exposed to various databases.
Students will apply this research report to the creation of a procedure with consideration of a single independent variable and it’s effect on the dependent variable. They will also use standard safety measures. General Tips Make sure that you have the attention of all students, preferably having students that need remediation near the instructors. Record observations and suggested modifications to facilitate instruction and student learning in the lesson.
