Track 1 Focus
Project Goals
- To teach pre-service teachers enrolled in EDT 346 (Reading Instruction in Middle Childhood) how to compile current, high quality text sets to meet Ohio Department of Education content standards.
- To create a model for developing text sets that can be shared with the educational community.
- To instruct students in how to use print and electronic sources to locate books for text sets.
- To teach students the value of book reviews in the selection of trade books.
Activities
- Students attended two training sessions to learn how to use print and electronic sources to develop their text sets.
- Students located books for their text sets with most students choosing titles not owned by the library at Miami.
- Pre-service teachers presented their text sets in class justifying their choice of titles.
- Titles from the students’ text sets were purchased for the IMC.
Assessment
- Students developed information literacy skills that they would not have done without the introduction of this modified assignment.
- Student performance in creating the text set was exceptional with a mean score for the assignment of 7.91/8.0
- Education faculty were impressed with how well the text set assignment helped students prepare for their integrated units.
- Students developed important skills that they can use when selecting materials as teachers.
- Skills learned by students could be applied to assignments in other courses.
- Students relied primarily on two sources to locate titles (Children’s Literature Database and ). The next time the course is taught students will be encouraged to use multiple search sources for book reviews and for locating titles.
