ILILE grant recipient 2006
Project Goals
- To introduce information literacy instruction into the four TAG courses (Educational Technology, Educational Psychology, Introduction to Exceptionalities, Education in a Democratic Society) in a systematic way and to increase discussion about information literacy among education faculty.
Activities
- A workshop was held in August 2006 for all faculty involved in the TAG curriculum. The focus of the workshop was to provide background information on information literacy and to begin discussion about how it could be effectively incorporated into the curriculum. Stipends of $200 were awarded to faculty who attended.
- Two follow-up workshops were held in December 2006 and April 2007.
- Instruction was provided in classes in Fall 2006 reaching 200 students (information literacy instruction in these classes had not taken place at all prior to this semester).
- In Spring 2007, four workshops were developed for students in the TAG courses. Different faculty assigned different workshops depending on course content and students attended outside of class time. This reduced in-class instruction.
- The workshops that were offered were: Navigating Education Databases, Savvy Internet Searching, APA Citation Style, Reading & Abstracting Research Articles.
- Students in Spring 2007 also had the option of taking online skills modules that covered some of the same content.
Assessment
- The project met the goal of 75% participation from the TAG faculty.
- The project brought TAG faculty together to discuss sequencing of courses, in addition to discussions of information literacy.
- Plans are underway to develop online skills modules that are education specific and that can be recommended to students as an alternative to workshops and in-class instruction.
- Tracking of students who have taken workshops/modules will address student concerns that they may be asked to take the same workshops/modules in multiple classes.
- Discussion will continue on how information literacy skills can be sequenced throughout the TAG courses and the rest of the curriculum.
