Track 1 Focus

Project Goals

  • To address students’ difficulty in mastering information literacy skills when conducting research in education
  • To enable education majors to expand their knowledge and use of available educational resources in order to be able to utilize resources when they enter the teaching profession.

Activities

  • Curriculum mapping process used to identify five core courses that all education majors are required to take.
  • Online tutorials were developed as a supplement to in-class instruction and personal research assistance. Tutorials meant to be vehicle for students to practice searching and reinforce skills.
  • Six tutorial modules were designed: (1) Understanding the nature of the research process (2) Using the university’s and OhioLINK’s online catalog (3) Using education databases including ERIC and Education Research Complete (4) Locating education statistical and demographic resources (5) Understanding APA documentation style and citation
  • Modules include video, PDF components, interactivity, exercises, and quizzes.
  • Students asked to use Feedback Form to provide input as to the tutorial’s usefulness and effectiveness.

Assessment

  • Tutorials have been well received by faculty and students.
  • Project is still a work in progress and will be revised as library’s Web site and education databases change.
  • Feedback from students will be used to guide changes.
  • Modules are being designed so as to be applicable to all education majors in Ohio.
  • The grant has helped advance a strong working relationship between instruction librarians and faculty in the School of Leadership and Policy Studies.
  • Tutorials fill a role in supplementing in-class instruction.
