Statewide Summit 2003 Focus Group Session 2

The goal is to provide guidance to the Institute in terms of strategies to provide through professional development and pre-service education.

Half the groups do question 1, half, question 2. Both do question 3.

Review and react to approaches to information and technology literacy. Consider the The AASL Nine Information Literacy Standards for Student Learning, the ACRL standards, the Ohio Technology Academic Content standards, the Big6 model and the InfOhio DIALOGUE Model. Compare the models and identify key common elements. Which elements are essential for student learning in Ohio? Which elements are priorities?

1. Review and react to the issue of implementing library media program functions through collaboration and partnership with classroom learning. Besides raising collective knowledge of functions and roles (addressed in the morning session), what can be done to improve the use and integration of library media functions with the classroom? Consider the Eisenberg “coordination-cooperation-collaboration” continuum. Brainstorm possible strategies for improved partnerships and then select the top 3 that you would recommend to form the core of the Institute program in terms of implementation strategies.
2. Provide advice on ways to deliver the message and how-to of meaningful, integrated library media programs. Focus on different types of products, services, or training that would best meet the needs of the different user groups, e.g., administrators, classroom teachers, library media specialists, parents and community members. What are preferred methods of delivering the necessary message and how-to. Include your reasons for advocating certain methods over others.

Panel discussion to debrief and synthesize from the groups.
