Information literacy instruction for candidates

The Summit’s Goals

The Teacher Education Faculty and Librarian Summit brought together education faculty, education librarians, and curriculum materials center professionals from several Ohio universities to discuss how the development of information literacy competencies can be integrated into teacher education. This included preparing pre-service teachers to be information literate for their personal and professional needs, as well as insuring their readiness to teach these skills to their future students. The goals of the Summit were to identify strategies and develop instructional modules that might serve as models for other teacher education curricula in Ohio and nationally.

Summit activities:

- Overview and discussion of Information Literacy Standards affecting pre-service teachers in their own training as well as in their professional teaching position: ISTE Standards, ACRL Standards, ODE Technology Standards, Information Power Information Literacy Standards

- Review of Components of Information Literacy in Teacher Education

- Assessment of current Information Literacy instruction in participating institutions

- Action plans for enhancing and developing Information Literacy programs

- Discussion of improvement of Information Literacy practices in teacher education at participating institutions and throughout the state

- Identification of role of ILILE in initiatives to develop effective Information Literacy modules
