Ohio Standards Connections:

Lesson Summary:

The librarian will review with the students the You Know It model to reinforce their understanding of the four step research process. The librarian and the teacher will also review the criteria developed to judge the significance of Renaissance art, literature, and architecture.  The students will then use the research process and the criteria to develop their justifications for selecting their top ten contributors ( from a supplied list) to Renaissance art, literature, and architecture.  The instruction will help students build their capacity to do quality research and increase their knowledge of significant Renaissance cultural achievements.

Estimated Duration:

Reviewing the You Know It model, the criteria, and selected resources  will take approximately thirty minutes.  Students will be given two hours to develop a research strategy and complete their research.

Commentary:

Pre-Assessment:

Students will be asked to describe how they used the You Know It model in previous assignments.  They will also be asked to suggest possible resources they will used to find information for this project.

Scoring Guidelines:

The teacher and librarian will determine through conversation with the students if they understand the assignment and are aware of the resources appropriate to the assignment.  The teacher and librarian will monitor student use of resources during the research process in the library.

Post-Assessment:

The fourth step of the model asks the students to reflect on how they did in their research and in meeting the requirements of the assignment. Students will be asked to reflect on the process, assess how well they did on the project, and suggest areas they could improve in the future.

Scoring Guidelines:

The teacher, librarian, and students will develop a rubric that will measure how well the student followed the You Know It model in completing the assignment.

Instructional Procedures:

The librarian will meet with the entire class and show the students a chart with the You Know It model depicted.  Individual students will be asked to describe what they would do to complete each of the four steps of  the research process.  The librarian will demonstrate how to use some of the resources available in the library that are appropriate for use with this project.  Students will then be given time to use the resources under the supervision of the teacher and librarian..

Differentiated Instructional Support

Encouraging students to work in groups may help students having problems with the model gain peer mediation and see examples of how the process works.  Graphic organizers may be used to help students see the flow of the research process and to sort information into more manageable segments.  The use of print, electronic, and audio formats may make information more assessable to a students.

Extension

Apply the You Know It model to other assignments and encourage other teachers to incorporate it into their teaching.  Show students that the process can apply to information searching that they do in their daily lives outside of school.
